Bonaire Monthly Tourism Performance – Preliminary results

The preliminary results for August 2023 indicate a total of 11,191 stayover visitors in Bonaire. This follows the reception of 11,582 stayover visitors in August 2022 and 11,900 visitors in August 2019.

Notably, there has been a decrease in air capacity compared to both 2022 and 2019. Moreover, KLM has transitioned from Boeing 777 to Airbus aircraft and limited seat availability between the ABC islands with local carriers.

The primary source markets for Bonaire’s tourism remain consistent, with the Netherlands and the United States leading the way. Dutch visitors comprised 5,760 (51.5%) of the total visitors, while the United States contributed 2,354 (21%) stayover visitors in August 2023.

Curaçao continues to play a vital role in Bonaire’s tourism landscape, contributing 1,594 (14.3%) visitors from the neighboring island. Other significant markets that contributed to Bonaire’s tourism success include Canada, Germany, Aruba, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia, and the United Kingdom. Germany emerged as a strong market in August 2023, with 207 stayover visitors recorded. This places Germany in the top-performing markets list for the month.

In terms of visitor demographics, the age range of 45 to 54 remains the most common among visitors, highlighting Bonaire’s appeal to mature travelers seeking a diverse range of experiences.

Analyzing the United States market further, the key states from which visitors originated include Florida, California, Texas, New York, Colorado, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and New Jersey.

For Dutch visitors, the main regions of origin were the South Netherlands, North Netherlands, and North Brabant.

Additionally, Bonaire’s cruise tourism segment contributed with 14,732 cruise visitors arriving in July 2023, facilitated by the presence of three cruise ships during the month.
