TCB and FuHiKuBo join forces to make hiking on Bonaire more accessible

Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) and Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano (FuHiKuBo), together with the Chantiwawa hiking group, are joining forces to make hiking on Bonaire more accessible, visible, and enjoyable for both residents and visitors.

Through this collaboration, the organizations will work together to further develop and promote selected hiking routes across the island, offering people the opportunity to experience Bonaire’s nature, culture, and history on foot.

Chantiwawa, a group of nature lovers and volunteers operating under FuHiKuBo, brings extensive experience in identifying, clearing, marking, and maintaining hiking trails. FuHiKuBo will contribute its historical and cultural knowledge, while TCB will support the digitalization and promotion of the routes.

A key part of the collaboration will be improving digital accessibility and wayfinding. Selected trails will receive digital information, including maps, route details, difficulty levels, points of interest, and relevant cultural and historical information. Signage at trailheads, including QR codes linking to the digital information, together with markers along the routes, will help hikers navigate the trails more easily and safely.

“Bonaire has so much to offer beyond its well-known coastal and underwater experiences. Our hiking trails provide another way to discover the island, its nature, history, and culture. Through this collaboration, we want to make these experiences easier to find and access while encouraging people to explore Bonaire responsibly,” said Elesiër Angel, Director of TCB.

The collaboration also aims to strengthen appreciation for Bonaire’s heritage by connecting visitors and residents with the stories, landscapes, and cultural elements found along the island’s hiking routes.

The Parties will begin by identifying selected new and existing trails for digitalization, improved signage, maintenance, and promotion, with additional routes and community activities to follow.

TCB, FuHiKuBo, and Chantiwawa look forward to encouraging more people to discover Bonaire on foot, safely, responsibly, and with a deeper appreciation for the island’s unique nature, culture, and heritage.
