Summer comedy Casa Coco puts Bonaire in the spotlight in cinemas this month

November 9, 2022

The sunny feel-good film Casa Coco, shot on Bonaire, will be shown in Dutch cinemas from November 10, 2022 and can also be seen on Bonaire from November 17. The film is about the Rotterdam group of friends (Loes Luca, Richard Groenendijk, Gijs de Lange, and Frédérique Spigt)  who spend the winter on Bonaire in the pension of Pleun Saris (Joke Bruijs). When Pleun discovers that her childhood sweetheart Toon Emmers (Gerard Cox) is also there, this causes quite a stir. Katja Schuurman, Oscar Aerts, Tania Kross, Pamela Teves and Chris Tates can also be seen in this summer comedy for old and young. The trailer for the film can be viewed here.

In January and February 2021, the filming for the film took place on Bonaire, with Kas Hamaka serving as the main location. Together with a number of scenes in Casa Calexico, this accommodation formed the setting for the fictional guest house ‘Casa Coco’. Other recordings took place at Delfins Beach Resort, Klein Bonaire, 1000 Steps and Sorobon. During the stay of the cast and crew, there was also time to explore and relax on the island, including during a sunset sailing cruise with Epic Tours. The presence of the large group of Famous Dutch people on Bonaire gave the production of the film some headaches at the time, as a lockdown and negative travel advice had been announced in the Netherlands during that period due to Covid-19. On the safe and sunny Bonaire, however, the recordings were able to continue unimpeded.

The story of Casa Coco: De ‘Rotterdamse’ Pleun (Joke Bruijs) has been running a Pension on Bonaire for years, focusing on the guest seeking contemplation and tranquility. In practice, these are mainly ‘Rotterdammers’ from her own circle of acquaintances, who like to be among each other. So is Pleun’s childhood sweetheart Toon (Gerard Cox), who, after his wife has announced that he wants to divorce him, comes with a couple of friends and notices that the days are less gray under the Bonairean sun. Pleun has built Casa Coco into a beautifully situated guest house, but due to increasing competition, her business is not running as well after the successful early years. Just as Pleun and Toon get closer, Toon discovers that the survival of Casa Coco is hanging by a thread. Can Toon save the Pension and recapture his childhood sweetheart?

The film is produced by Greenfield Film Productions and Messercola. The film is directed by Bob Wilbers and the screenplay is written by Jacqueline Epskamp with the cooperation of Maria Goos, Peter Römer and Gerard Cox. Casa Coco will be released in theaters on November 10, 2022 by film distributor WW Entertainment.
