February 2, 2023

Bonaire Monthly Tourism Performance – Preliminary results

Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) reports that Bonaire welcomed a total of 16,285 stay over visitors in January of 2023. Over 10% more stayover visitors have been recorded compared to January 2019. Bonaire’s two largest source markets have shown signs of growth. There was a total of 8,383 Dutch visitors (51%) and 3,938 American stay over visitors (24%). Our Dutch stay over visitors primarily traveled from the southern and northern regions of their home country. Whereas most of our American stay over visitors are from the following eight states: Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Minnesota. Furthermore 1,428 (or 8%) of all visitors to Bonaire came from neighboring island Curaçao.

Bonaire saw 533 Canadian stay over visitors in January, making Canada the island’s fourth best-performing market that month.

Multiple secondary markets, including Germany, Aruba, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Colombia, have kept the same market share in January 2023 as they did in December 2022.

TCB constantly evaluates the state of the tourism industry by tracking key performance indicators and comparing them to the situation before the pandemic. As one of Bonaire’s most successful years ever, 2019 is now serving as the barometer by which the island’s tourism is being measured.

Visitors from the United States stayed an average of seven nights while those from the Netherlands stayed an average of fourteen. Furthermore, most Americans are middle-aged (55+), while most Dutch are younger (45+).

There were 30 cruise ships that visited Bonaire in December of 2022, with a total of 73,952 passengers.
