Lionfish Derby

March 21 @ 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

On March 21st, STINAPA is organizing the Lionfish Derby once again at Washington Slagbaai National Park. During this competition, 15 teams will compete to catch the most, the largest, and the smallest lionfish. Each team consists of two hunters and one spotter.

Lionfish were first spotted off the coast of Bonaire in 2009. Since then, STINAPA has been working together with a dedicated group of volunteers to track, monitor, and control this invasive species. One of the ways this is done is by organizing the annual Lionfish Derby, where participants actively hunt lionfish.

The 2026 Lionfish Derby will start at 8:00 AM at the entrance of Washington Slagbaai National Park, and all hunters are expected to return by 3:00 PM for the fish count. Afterwards, there will be a happy hour where teams can fillet their catch and donate the fish. During this time, STINAPA will also announce the winners for largest fish, most catches, and smallest fish.
