Bonaire Regatta 2024 – A Celebration of Culture, History, Sailing and Tradition

October 16, 2024

Bonaire Regatta 2024 concluded with races across a variety of categories, bringing together competitors from the Caribbean and beyond. The annual event, which took place from October 6–12, 2024, showcased sailors of all ages and skill levels competing in multiple classes, ranging from Optimist and Sunfish to Yachts, Boto di Piskado, Kitesurfing, Wingfoil, and Windsurfing, making it an unforgettable Regatta.

Boto di Piskado den Regatta 2024
One of the most special categories in this year’s Regatta was the Boto di Piskado (fishermen’s boats). The Boto di Piskado holds a deep-rooted tradition in Bonaire’s Regatta, where the event itself first started in 1968. However, in recent years, the participation of these iconic fishing boats has dwindled due to many of them falling into disrepair.

This year, Tourism Corporation Bonaire partnered with Kooyman to help bring the fishing boats back to the Regatta. Kooyman generously sponsored the Regatta, contributing to the restoration of several fishing boats, allowing them to once again participate in the race. This effort is expected to sustain Boto di Piskado’s presence in future Regattas.

In the Boto di Piskado category for Regatta 2024, Giovanni Soliano, with his boat Arantsa, secured first place. Giovanni returned to Bonaire from the United States to honor his late father and brother, both of whom had passed away recently. A heartfelt thanks goes to Kooyman for their invaluable contribution to restoring this beloved tradition to the Regatta.

Dedication to Mr. Henry Toré
This year’s Regatta was also dedicated to Mr. Henry Toré, a Life Member of the Bonaire Lions Club and a pivotal figure in the regatta’s history. Mr.Toré played an instrumental role in establishing the Festival di Regatta in 1983, which transformed the event into not only a day of sailing but also a celebration of music, culture, and community. This year’s event recognized and honored his contributions and lifelong dedication to education and cultural development on Bonaire.

Regatta Village and Entertainment
The Regatta Village served as the heart of the celebration, offering nightly entertainment from October 9–12. The village hosted a range of performances from local and international artists, including DJ Osocity, Frenna, Semii Marten, Luis Moka, BB Bad, ICONS, Jeon, Ir Sais, DJ Krokz, Tsean, Chris Strickz, Haitian Compa Band, Steel Band, JC & Friends and more. The village also featured food stalls, art displays, a kids’ area, and cultural activities, making it a hub of excitement for both locals and visitors.
